The division specialises in the design and manufacture of sophisticated motion simulators—precision systems indispensable for testing inertial units, accelerometers, and gyroscopes. Given the sensitivity of these sensors, the mechanical components must adhere to exacting tolerances. 

 

The division operates exclusively in “Project Mode,” where production is dictated by bespoke customer orders rather than steady-state manufacturing. This results in high technical variability and a reliance on complex, low-volume components. Before meviy

Prior to the integration of meviy, Exail’s legacy procurement model faced significant friction points that hampered business agility and inflated administrative overhead. 
 

  • Visibility constraints: the bespoke nature of “Project Mode” meant the division lacked the typical 6-to-8-month forecasting windows found in mass production. Procurement was frequently reactive, triggered only once a project was secured. 
  • The volume/complexity gap: the logistical scale is formidable; a single simulator comprises between 1,000 and 2,000 unique articles. With roughly one-third of these being custom-machined parts, the administrative burden of managing hundreds of manual Requests for Quote (RFQs) was unsustainable. 
  • Supplier hesitancy: securing capacity from traditional machining partners for low-volume, highly technical parts was a constant struggle. Most workshops prioritise high-volume runs, leading to extended lead times and a lack of responsiveness for “Project Mode” requirements. 

 

These bottlenecks necessitated a shift toward an embedded procurement partner capable of providing the speed of a digital platform with the technical depth of a traditional machine shop. 

Decision point: why was meviy selected as the manufacturing partner for this project?

The transition to meviy was a logical evolution of Exail’s long-standing relationship with Misumi. Already accustomed to the efficiency of Misumi’s standard catalogue components, Exail recognised the strategic value of applying that same “off-the-shelf” convenience to custom machining. 
 

The selection of meviy was predicated on three core pillars: 

 

  • Platform ergonomics: the ability to seamlessly upload 3D CAD models eliminated the friction of manual technical drawing exchanges and data entry. 
  • Instant quote functionality: moving from days of waiting for supplier feedback to “instant chiffrage” transformed the speed of the R&D and design phases. 
  • Feasibility and cost transparency: the platform provides immediate feedback on manufacturability. This allows engineers to adjust designs for cost-optimisation and production readiness in real-time, long before a purchase order is even issued. 

After meviy: the workflow in practice

The implementation of meviy has fostered a sophisticated “hybrid” procurement model that balances automated speed with strategic oversight of high-tolerance components. 

 

The Bureau d’Études (Design Office) utilizes the platform directly to validate technical concepts and obtain rapid pricing during the R&D stage. The Purchasing Department then oversees weekly ordering cycles. However, a critical technical distinction is maintained: for drawings featuring specific “QC” (Quality Control) codes—indicating requirements for dimensional or geometric reports—Exail utilises a manual quoting protocol to ensure rigorous human oversight of quality documentation. 

 

Technically, the usage has matured from simple milling to a full-spectrum machining strategy. While Aluminium and Stainless Steel remain the primary materials, Exail is now actively integrating “Turning” (tournage) and specialised Surtec surface treatments. This shift marks a transition from using meviy solely for milling-focused prototypes to a comprehensive tool for production-grade mechatronics. 

Proof: measurable results

The integration of meviy has delivered significant empirical improvements to Exail’s supply chain efficiency: 

 

  • Lead time compression: standard procurement cycles have been slashed from 4–6 weeks to a fixed 16-day window. While the platform offers even faster 7-day “express” deliveries, Exail has strategically selected the 16-day option as the ideal cost-optimised window for their project timelines. 
  • Inventory optimisation: guaranteed lead times have facilitated a move to a Just-in-Time (JIT) model. By ordering “at the right time,” Exail has effectively eliminated the need for costly safety stocks. 
  • Procurement streamlining: perhaps the most significant administrative win is the “catalogue conversion.” Once a bespoke part is ordered via meviy, it is assigned a Misumi article code. This effectively turns a custom technical part into a standard catalogue product, allowing the procurement team to reorder with a single click. 
  • Reliability: the platform maintains a high rate of technical conformity. On the rare occasion of a non-conformity, meviy’s responsiveness has ensured that project delivery schedules remain uncompromised.

Broader business implications

The success at the Bonneuil-sur-Marne site currently serves as a strategic blueprint for the wider Exail organisation. With 21 production sites globally, efforts are underway to promote meviy as a group-wide standard for machining procurement. 

 

The next phase of this expansion focuses on the Lannion site, where meviy will be introduced to streamline their specific machining requirements. Moving forward, the partnership will deepen through the standardisation of Quality Control (QC) reporting within the digital workflow and the continued integration of complex “Turning” capabilities. What began as a tool for rapid prototyping has matured into a cornerstone of Exail’s project-based production strategy, demonstrating the vital role of digital procurement in high-end mechatronic manufacturing.
