The challenge

Manufacturability, explained — not just rejected.

What it is

Future Engineers Start Here is a challenge from meviy, MISUMI's on-demand manufacturing platform. Submit a 3D CAD model of a real engineering project and get professional manufacturability feedback — the kind most engineering students only see after a drawing gets rejected.

Why it exists

Manufacturability is usually taught the hard way: through rejected drawings, not through explanation. This programme closes that gap directly. MISUMI has run it in Japan since 2023, where student teams already use meviy for competition and research components. This is the first time it's been offered to European students.

What you gain

Feedback on a real project, from meviy's engineering team. A chance to win manufacturing credit worth up to €1,500. And direct experience of a manufacturability review, before you need it for a job.

Why join

Real feedback. Real projects. No barriers.

01

Real feedback

Get feedback most students never receive. Manufacturability reviews are standard in industry and rare in coursework.

02

Real project

Work with a real project. Submit your thesis, club build or competition entry — not a test file.

03

No barriers to entry

No 2D drawings, no company account, no manufacturing background required.

04

Prizes

Win manufacturing credit. Three prize tiers, from €500 to €1,500, redeemable on the meviy platform.

05

Free entry

No purchase necessary at any stage.

How it works

Apply in about ten minutes.

You'll need a meviy account, a 3D CAD model of your project, and about ten minutes.

Scoring

Know exactly what you're judged on.

Every entry is scored against a published rubric, by two judges from meviy's engineering and product team. You know exactly what you're being judged on before you apply.

  1. Manufacturability engagement

    30 points

Did you act on the instant feedback, or upload once and stop? A documented iteration cycle scores highest.

  2. Technical ambition & distinctiveness

    25 points

Complexity relative to your skill level, benchmarked against your year group — a first-year's bracket isn't a postgraduate's.

  3. Real-world relevance

    15 points

Is this an active project — a thesis, club build, or competition entry — rather than a throwaway test file?

  4. Curiosity & spirit of challenge

    15 points

Genuine motivation, judged from your written answer and backed by the revisions you actually made.

  5. Forward ambition

    15 points

How specific is your answer about what comes next — a competition entry, research use, publication, or a startup idea?

100points total

Total: 100 points. Technical core (dimensions 1–3) makes up 70 points. The human dimension (dimensions 4–5) makes up 30 points.

Judging process

Two judges score every entry independently. Scores are combined and ranked. The top entries get a joint review, to check nothing's scored purely for being unusual. Ties are broken by the manufacturability engagement score.

The fine print

Programme rules.

This section summarises the rules that apply to the programme. It's a plain-language guide, not a replacement for the full Terms and Conditions.

Eligibility

  • You must be officially enrolled at an accredited university or higher-education institution in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland.
  • You must be in your final year of an undergraduate degree, or on a bachelor's or master's programme, in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, robotics or a closely related discipline.
  • Enrolment is self-declared when you apply. The Organiser may ask for proof, such as a student ID or a letter from your institution, at any stage — including before results are finalised.
  • You can apply individually, or as the authorised representative of a university engineering society, robotics club or similar student organisation, submitting a joint entry. Every member whose work is included must meet the eligibility criteria above.
  • Employees of MISUMI Group companies, and their immediate family, cannot apply.

Participation requirements

To apply, you'll need: a completed application form with accurate contact details; a 3D CAD model (for example, in STEP format) of a real, self-designed engineering component or project; and a short written description of the project, your design intent, and the feedback you're after. No 2D drawing, company account or prior manufacturing experience is required. You must hold the rights to submit your files, and they must not contain confidential information belonging to anyone else — for example, an employer or research sponsor.

You need approval from your academic advisor, or another responsible faculty member, before you apply.

Limitations

  • One application per applicant or student organisation. Extra applications are invalid — only the first valid one is considered.
  • Prizes are meviy manufacturing credit vouchers: €1,500 for first place, €750 for second, €500 for third. Vouchers are valid for 90 days from issue, have no cash alternative, and can't be transferred, resold or exchanged for anything else.
  • Winners must confirm acceptance within 7 working days of notification, or the prize may be forfeited and awarded to another entrant.
  • Providing a testimonial is optional and is never a condition of receiving a prize.
  • If you win, you agree to your name, university, placing and prize being published on meviy's marketing channels, including its website and social media.
  • The Organiser may amend, suspend, or cancel the programme, or disqualify an entry, in the circumstances set out in the full Terms and Conditions.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Who can apply?

Students officially enrolled at an accredited university in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, in their final undergraduate year, or on a bachelor's or master's programme, in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, robotics or a closely related discipline.

Do I need a company account or manufacturing experience?

No. The programme is designed to need neither. You don't need a 2D drawing either — a 3D CAD model is enough.

What do I need to submit?

A completed application form, a 3D CAD model of a real project (STEP format works well), and a short description covering your project, your design intent, and the feedback you're after.

Can I apply as a team?

Yes. You can apply as the authorised representative of a university engineering society, robotics club, or similar student organisation. Every team member whose work is included must meet the eligibility criteria.

How are entries judged?

Two judges from the meviy engineering and product team score every entry independently, against a published 100-point rubric: 70 points for manufacturability, feasibility and design intent, and 30 points for communication and engagement with the process. Scores are combined and ranked, and the top entries get a joint review before results are confirmed.

What can I win?

Manufacturing credit vouchers on the meviy platform: €1,500 for first place, €750 for second, €500 for third. Vouchers are valid for 90 days and have no cash alternative.

When do applications close?

1 December 2026, 23:59 CET. Judging runs through mid-December, with results announced the same month.

Does entering cost anything?

No. Participation is free, and no purchase is necessary at any stage.

What happens to my design?

You keep full ownership of your work. The Organiser only reviews it for judging and administering the programme, and treats your files as confidential. It won't use your project in marketing without asking you separately first.

Do I need permission from my university?

Yes. You need approval from your academic advisor, or another responsible faculty member, before you apply.

Your next project could be one manufacturability review away from working better.

Applications close 1 December 2026.
